Abstract Writing Guidelines for High School/Undergraduate Students

What is a scientific abstract?
Abstract is a preview, or summary of a detail and major aspects of your basic or clinical research work/article that squeezes down a large work into concise and succinct summary (usually in one paragraph of 250-300 words) that helps audience/reader to readily understand the gist of the entire work. The contents of your abstract also guide researchers/clinicians to determine whether the research work presented in the abstract is relevant to their work or not. Therefore, it is necessary for the high school and undergraduate students to get acquainted with the basics and main elements of writing abstracts with major emphasis on conveying methods and main results.

How to write an attractive and impressive scientific abstract?
The following five (6) main elements will help you to write an attractive and impressive abstract for the presentation in seminars/conferences or scientific papers for publication.

1. Background/Introduction (~15%):
*Start with brief and attractive introduction of your work. This part contains the (i) opening (ii) supporting and (iii) introductory topic sentences.

2. Significance/Purpose/Scope/Objective/Hypothesis (~25%):
*Briefly mention about significance of your work (These lines are to answer “Why you did the research”?

3. Methods/Experimental Design (~25%):
*Clearly describe the methodology/experimental approach, which is used in the conduct of study for in-depth analysis of a particular subject.

4. Results/Major Findings (20%):
*The results section is the most important part of your abstract that explicitly describes what your key findings are?

5. Conclusion (15%):
*Concisely Craft a take home message from key findings of your research at the end of the abstract to conclude the study.

6. Title:
*Do not start with title first – write at the end, after completing your abstract. Use essential terms that capture the content of your paper/research work and put them into ~15-20 words. Avoid using abbreviations and jargon in the title.

Note: Read, edit, and revise your abstract to make sure for its correctness and accuracy before submitting to ASSET or any other conferences or for the publication.
