Olfactory dysfunction, such as difficulty in detecting, identifying, or remembering odors, often precedes cognitive symptoms of AD by several years. This makes it a valuable early indicator for the disease. Patterns of olfactory impairment are linked to the atrophy of specific brain regions which can be detected using imaging and artificial intelligence much earlier than identified by the radiologist. ‎
